Ranking well on Google is important. But do you also want to appear in Google’s AI Overviews? If so, you’ll need to do more than just traditional SEO.
Research reveals striking insights
Ahrefs analyzed no fewer than 1 million search queries in which AI Overviews appeared in the search results. The results reveal something striking:
If you rank highly in Google’s organic search results, you’re slightly more likely to be included in the AI Overview. But even if you rank first in the search results at , you’ll only be mentioned in 50% of the cases in the AI summary.
Ranking does not guarantee visibility
There is only a moderate correlation (0.347) between your position in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) and your inclusion in AI Overviews. In other words, Google does not use the search results directly as a source for AI summaries.
- Are you in the top 10? If so, you're more likely to be mentioned.
- Are you mentioned and do you rank high on Google? If so, you’ll often rank higher in the AI Overview itself as well.
Google Looks Beyond Just SEO
So Google doesn't simply choose the top 3 or top 10 results to populate AI Overviews. The technology behind AI Overviews analyzes content differently than the traditional algorithm.
So what does matter? Consider:
- Clarity of your text (clear language)
- Answer-oriented writing (your content actually answers the question)
- Structured data and semantics (AI understands context and relationships)
- Expertise and authority (reliable sources are cited more often)
What does this mean for your content strategy?
If you’re currently optimizing only for traditional SEO (keywords, meta descriptions, backlinks), you run the risk of being left out of AI Overviews.
The solution? Combine SEO with AI optimization:
- Write content that AI can understand —use clear sentences, explain terms, and provide concise answers to frequently asked questions.
- Think in terms of intent, not just keywords —AI looks at meaning, not just keyword density.
- Build your authority —AI models prefer reliable, well-researched content.
- Use structured data —this helps AI better interpret your content.
Conclusion: Optimize Twice
SEO remains important, but it is no longer a guarantee of visibility in AI Overviews. Do you want maximum online visibility? Then make sure your content is optimized for both search engines and AI systems.
